Bord na Móna Invests in Future Climate Leaders
Bord na Móna has awarded scholarships to 11 outstanding students for the 2024/2025 academic year, emphasizing its commitment to climate action and sustainable economic development.
Ten recipients were selected under the ‘Pathways to the Future’ program, aimed at empowering students pursuing higher education in climate solutions. Additionally, Cormac Petrie from Co. Roscommon received a specialized scholarship in collaboration with Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Athlone.
Supporting Education in Renewable Energy
Cormac Petrie is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with Energy program at TUS Athlone. This scholarship will help alleviate the financial challenges associated with higher education and enable him to focus on his academic and professional goals.
Since its inception in 2022, Bord na Móna’s scholarship fund has been instrumental in assisting students to manage educational expenses while preparing them for impactful careers.
Recognizing Academic Excellence
This year’s recipients span multiple prestigious institutions, including University College Dublin (UCD), Dublin Business School (DBS), University of Limerick (UL), and Maynooth University. University College Cork (UCC)

Produced six recipients: Marc Barrett Perez, Niamh O’Brien, Ciaran Kelleher, Rory Murphy, Lily Clifton, and Seamus Fleming. Other honorees include Alannah Haugh (UCD), Paxia Novorin (DBS), Tom Tracey (UL), and Shane Sullivan (Maynooth University).
Selection Process for Scholarships
Applicants were required to submit a comprehensive business case addressing renewable energy and a personal statement showcasing their leadership qualities. Eligible students were enrolled in undergraduate (Level 8), master’s, or doctoral programs with a focus on climate action and sustainable development.
Celebrating Achievements
A special ceremony at Bord na Móna’s Newbridge headquarters in Co. Kildare recognized the scholarship recipients. Sharon Doyle, Head of HR and Corporate Affairs at Bord na Móna, praised the recipients’ innovative thinking, stating:
