The Tamil Nadu government is encouraging students with 80% marks or higher in their higher secondary (Class 12) exams to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP) scholarship. 

This merit-cum-means scheme aims to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education. The Union Ministry of Education has recently issued detailed guidelines for students to apply.

Scholarship Details and Benefits

The PM-USP scholarship provides financial support to meritorious students. The scholarship amount varies based on the level of study:

  • Undergraduate (UG) students: Rs. 12,000 per year for the first three years and Rs 20,000 per year for the final year.
  • Postgraduate (PG) students: Rs 20,000 per year.
  • Professional courses (5-year duration): Rs 12,000 for the first three years, then Rs 20,000 per year for the remaining two years.

For students pursuing technical courses like B.Tech and B.Engg, the scholarship is available up to the graduation level. Students in these fields will receive Rs 12,000 for the first three years and Rs 20,000 for the fourth year.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must meet the following eligibility requirements:    

  • Academic performance: A minimum of 80% marks in the higher secondary exams.
  • Parental income: The family income should not exceed Rs 4.5 lakh per annum.
  • Reservation: Scholarships are reserved as follows:
    • 15% for SCs
    • 7.5% for STs
    • 27% for OBCs
    • 5% for students with disabilities (horizontal reservation)

Fifty percent of the scholarships are designated for female students, distributed according to the state’s population in the 18-25 age group.

Application Process

Interested students can apply through the National Scholarships Portal (NSP) at www.scholarships.gov.in. Fresh applicants must provide an income certificate along with their application.
