How Austria Supports Ukrainian Students: Scholarships, University Fees & Exchanges

Dreaming of an exchange semester is one thing, but living the experience often goes far beyond expectations. My journey to Vienna was full of challenges, lessons

and transformative moments. Here’s how I found myself studying at one of Europe’s most prestigious universities and the insights I gained along the way.

The Start of a Dream From Kyiv to Vienna

I saw the Vienna University of Economics and Business for the first time in the spring of 2022. It was only for a short time, but I couldn’t help but imagine myself studying there. Fate and a lot of perseverance made that dream come true.

Within months, I applied for the university’s Special Exchange Programme for Students from Ukrainian Universities. This program is accessible to many because it is accepted from individuals or through nominations by Ukrainian institutions.

I was keen on pursuing several exchange opportunities as a second-year student of Business Economics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. I have been rejected thrice within the course of a year, but I never gave up.

Overcoming Challenges Lessons in Resilience

Receiving my acceptance letter was an unforgettable moment, validation of my persistence. It taught me an invaluable lesson: setbacks are part of the process. To all those applying for such programs, my advice is simple:

Refine your application materials – Review your CV, personal statement, and motivation letter carefully. Seek constructive feedback, but remember, not all advice is equally valuable.

Be unique through extracurricular activities – Engage in student governance, volunteer projects, or youth initiatives. Your unique experiences and leadership potential can make your application more compelling.

Academic and Personal Growth in Vienna

I had the chance to learn very interesting subjects like Fashion Marketing, Fintech, and Start-Up Creation during my exchange. So, I had the chance to dive into the EU’s educational system. Vienna University of Economics and Business has a large variety of courses that makes for an incredibly rich academic experience.

But the learning did not stop at the school. I was exposed to fantastic people from around the globe and created lifelong friendships in a multicultural environment.

A Year That Changed Everything

Though my exchange program was scheduled for a semester, I spent a year in Vienna. It was a transformative year, not just personally, professionally, and culturally.

I traveled to 13 cities across eight countries, experiencing the grandeur of the Alps, the charm of Lake Como, the majesty of the Coliseum, and architectural wonders like Gaudi’s masterpieces and the Eiffel Tower. These adventures broadened my perspective, inspiring me to dream bigger and aim higher.

Austria’s Support for Ukrainian Students

It is really worth appreciating the magnanimity of Austria towards Ukrainian students especially at this critical time. Thanks to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Ernst Mach Grant – UKRAINE that financed my studies.

In addition, since the summer semester of 2022, we, as Ukrainian students in Austria, are exempt from regular tuition fees, which amount to about €726.72 per semester. We only pay a nominal fee of €21.20 – a small but important relief during uncertain times.

Return home to inspire change

I went back to Ukraine to pursue my Bachelor’s degree but a new sense of purpose had now begun. Empower others to take on opportunities provided by the EU.

I currently take part in the Young European Ambassadors program in Ukraine, sharing experiences with my fellow young people, calling on them to participate in the exchange programs.

I was involved in other projects aiming for increased gender equality and was active in youth diplomacy initiatives. Now, I have the function of a project manager, providing informal education in international relations to girls in the “Girl’s Diplomatic Academy 2.0”.

Being the PR Manager for “United Youth” in Ukraine, I spread and enhance youth diplomacy. Recently, I also became a part of the EU4Youth Alumni Network, so I extend my mission further to have meaningful change.

Final Thoughts The Power of Resilience

The Vienna year was more than a learning experience; it was one of discovery and self-realization, showing me the world of possibilities that opens up when one believes in his or her dreams and works tirelessly to achieve them.

To all who are contemplating studying abroad, my message is clear: Go for it! The path may not be easy, but the rewards, life-long memories, global friendships, and invaluable skills—are worth every effort.

Your dreams are within reach. All it takes is determination and a willingness to embrace the journey ahead
